Hesperis matronalis produces beautiful mauve-purple flower spikes in spring and early summer over attractive rosettes of dark green foliage, filling your garden with sweet scent all spring and into the summer. Seed follows and ripens into August. Hesperis is hermaphrodite, meaning it has both male and female parts, and is much loved by our pollinating friends, bees and butterflies will come flocking to feast on the sweet nectar. Hesperis matronalis is perfect for both borders and containers. Also known as Sweet Rocket, the leaves are edible, and apparently quite rich in vitamin C and can be added to salads. In the language of flowers, Hesperis was given to mean deceit as the sweet perfume is not as noticeable during the day, the name probably coming from the Greek word Hespera which means evening. Hesperis matronalis are tolerant of poor soils, preferring moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Reaching a mature height of approximately 90cm and spreading to around 45cm, Hesperis will thrive outside all year round to enjoy for year to come with no winter protection required.
