Hellebores are a genus within the Ranunculaceae family, native to Europe and Asia. They are commonly referred to as ‘Christmas rose’ or ‘Lenten rose’. The genus was first established by Carl Linnaeus in 1753. The genus name derives from the Greek word ‘helein’ meaning ‘injure’ and ‘bora’ meaning food.
Hellebores are rhizomatous, herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennials that are an iconic and sought-after plant for a winter garden. Bowl-shaped flowers are produced in an array of colours, sat atop dark slender stems and clump forming basal foliage.
