Description

Inject your garden with a touch of magic this winter with this cold weather staple. Helleborus are one of the most popular winter flowering bloom and are nicknamed the 'Christmas' or 'Lenten' Rose as flowers can often be seen flourishing on Christmas Day, lifting the gloomiest of spaces. Although their delicate, blousy blooms are similar to that of a Rose, Helleborus are in fact a relation of the Buttercup family. It is known that ancient communities used parts of a Helleborus to create medicines for illness such as gout, paralysis, and insanity. It was later discovered that consuming large volumes of these medicines, or any mixture containing Helleborus were to be detrimental. These plants are highly toxic when ingested and people soon suffered from vertigo and swelling of the tongue and throat. Nowadays the fully hardy perennial is praised for its tolerance of drought and neglect and ability to bloom through cold winter snow when most other plants slumber. This carefully selected collection of hellebores features Helleborus Niger Praecox, Helleborus Double Pink Dark Spotted and Helleborus Single green. Helleborus Niger Praecox is possibly the best know Helleborus This variety displays a sturdy and clump forming habit of glossy evergreen foliage that supports large, cup-shaped white flowers that are said to be particularly early to appear. The festive mixture of white and green in this collection make the perfect Christmas time purchase. Your hellebores will thrive in moist but well drained soil in part shade. They will arrive in 9cm pots, but they will eventually reach a height of 35cm (14in).
