Helens flower is said to be named as the central disc resembles the golden headdress worn by Helen of Troy. Helenium Kanaria, with bright, giant, canary yellow blooms and prominent central yellow cones which turn orange-brown as they mature, is certainly fit for a queen. Incredibly long flowering, the characteristic, shuttlecock-like flower shape is quite like any other. Tall strong stems hold the blooms high above the foliage, and make them perfect as cut flowers, lasting well in a vase in your home. So versatile, whether planted with grasses in a prairie garden, in a cottage garden or in a more formal design, Helenium are happy in containers or borders creating bold colour for months on end from mid-summer, until well into the autumn. Also known as Sneezeweed as apparently the leaves were once used in snuff! So easy to grow and very long flowering, Helenium prefer to be grown in well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Kanaria grows outside happily with no winter protection, reaching heights of approximately 1.2cm and spread to 60cm.
