Description

Salvation for nectar seekers, Gaultheria mucronate is a dense evergreen shrub that will create interest in your garden all year round. Commonly known as the Partridge Berry or Wintergreen and formerly called Pernettya, these dwarf evergreen shrubs display clusters of nectar-rich, bell-shaped blooms in late spring and early summer above the glossy foliage. The nectar-rich blooms are loved by bees and butterflies, who will come flocking into your garden for a feast from May to June. In autumn, long lasting, fleshy, shiny berries up to 1.5cm develop, dripping from the branches from September through to November. Named from the latin for mucronate, meaning prickly, referring to the foliage. Gaultheria mucronate prefer to be grown in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil in part shade, or grow in pots using ericaceous compost. Reaching a height and spread of 1.2m , Gaultheria are fully hardy so will happily grow outside for you to enjoy all year round for years to come without winter protection. Dioecious - requiring both male and female to produce berries. To encourage the berrying female Gaultheria to flower, one male is recommended to every five female berrying varieties. It prefers a loamy, acidic soil but can also tolerate swampy conditions. The mucronata is a 'hermaphrodite' therefore it will produce berries but it will also cross pollinate your female variety.

HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
