Description

The sweetly scented Galium odoratum is sure to brighten a dry shady place and put a smile of your face. Also known as Sweet Woodruff and Wild Baby's Breath, prepare to be amazed as a lush green carpet of sweetly scented foliage creates amazing, non-invasive, weed-suppressing groundcover. The bright green, lance-shaped leaves are held in whorls of 6-9 on upright stems around 30cm high, the sweet scent intensifying as they age. In late spring and summer clusters of fragrant, starry flowers appear above, the delicious scent attracting plenty of bees into your garden for a feast. In late summer and early autumn, small fruits follow shortly afterwards each covered in tiny hooks which allow the seeds to be spread by passing wildlife. Galium odoratum is excellent as cut flowers for a vase, and the foliage can be dried and used as sweet smelling potpourii. In Germany Galium odoratum is used to flavour a sweet May wine called Maitrank, a sweet punch and beer as well as flavoured jellies. Galium odoratum is rabbit resistant and prefers to be in moist, well-drained soil in full or part shade. Growing to a height of 30cm and spreading up to 90cm, it is fully hardy in the UK so you can enjoy it for years to come without any winter protection.
