Fritillaria persicara Purple Dynamite

Exciting, new and unusual clump-forming variety with glossy, strap-like leaves held from March to June each year. In April, Fritillaria persica 'Purple Dynamite' produces large, plum-purple buds that look like miniature bombs - these open from the bottom upwards to reveal waxy looking, bell-shaped flowers which hang from a tall, stout central stem and are accented by suspended golden stamen. Rich jewels which are retained through to May and are alluring to bees and other pollinators as well as to people. Ancestors of Fritillaria persica 'Purple Dynamite' originate from Turkey (or Persia as it was known) and prefer a well-drained soil in full sun to perform at their best. They will bring a rich, extravagant presence to borders, rockeries, pots and lawns that is hard to surpass. Flowers are also excellent for a vase or floral bouquet. Hardy, bulbous perennials which do not need winter protection as long as they are planted in a free-draining site which does not become saturated over the cold weather.
