Description

A vignette of Fritillaria meleagris gently nodding their graceful heads amongst the grass in the spring breeze is a scene which has won the hearts of many over the years. The unmistakeable flower heads, dusky-purple and matte, in a unique chequerboard pattern will capture your attention, just waiting for you to peek around the recurved petals and into the heart. It is easy to see where this unusual British native beauty gets its common name, Snake's head fritillary - in early spring, the fresh buds and leaves push their way up through the grass like the nose of a small snake before elongating and arching in a distinctly reptilian fashion. The pattern on each petal looks as if it is intricately made of scales, completing the look of this elegant little plant which will reach a maximum height of 30cm.The curving, architectural beauty of Fritillaria meleagris make them excellent cut flowers, adding a final flourish to a floral arrangement and simply beautiful in a single bud vase. For best results, plant bulbs 20cm deep on their sides in autumn in well-drained soil which remains damp in the summer. Best grown to naturalise in meadow areas and informal planting schemes in dappled shade.
