Description

Fritillaria meleagris Alba are a graceful and unusual looking perennial which will add a whimsical touch of white to your naturalistic planting scheme.Pretty, delicate pendants of creamy-white with a faint chequerboard pattern dance amongst the grass in the spring breeze on wiry stems reaching up to 30cm high. These delightful British native beauties get their common name, Snake's head fritillary from their reptilian looks - arching stems push their way up through the grass like the nose of a small snake in spring and the pattern on each petal looks as if it is intricately made of scales, completing the look of this elegant little plant. The curving architectural beauty of Fritillaria meleagris make them excellent as cut flowers, adding a final flourish to a floral arrangement and simply beautiful in a bud vase. For best results, plant bulbs 10cm deep on their sides in autumn in well-drained soil which remains damp in the summer. Best grown to naturalise in meadow areas and informal planting schemes in dappled shade.
