Intriguing burnt-orange blooms of Fritillaria imperialis Orange Beauty provide a majestic beauty which is unrivalled in the spring garden. Unusual and exotic looking Turkish beauties, Fritillaria imperialis are more commonly known as Crown Imperials and make excellent cut flowers. Sturdy stems in contrasting deep-purple rise from March onwards, reaching heights of up to 90cm before bursting into a cluster of downward facing, orange flower-heads with a tuft of foliage crowning them above. According to legend, as Jesus was on his way to be crucified, all flowers bent their headsu2026except for the proud Crown Imperial. God reprimanded the plant, and it has bowed its head ever since. Loved by bees and deer resistant, the plants have a faint musky odour, which is known to keep moles, mice, and other rodents away. Plant your bulbs in autumn, 25cm deep in well-drained soil where they will happily naturalise in sun or part shade, weaving into a tapestry of other flowering bulbs in your spring borders, or mass planted to provide an impact of tropical colour.
