Vibrant orange bells of Fritillaria imperialis Rubra make a bold statement in the spring garden.Unusual and majestic, Fritillaria imperialis are more commonly known as Crown Imperials and make excellent cut flowers.Orange-red bell-shaped pendant flowers bloom atop tall purple upright stems in spring, reaching heights of 90cm with a tuft of glossy foliage on top. Great for planting at the back of the border or pot where they will stand regal and proud amongst your spring planting scheme.According to legend, as Jesus was on his way to be crucified, all flowers bent their headsu2026except for the proud Crown Imperial. God reprimanded the plant, and it has bowed its head ever since. Loved by bees and deer resistant, the plants have a faint musky odour, which is known to keep moles, mice, and other rodents away. Plant your bulbs in early autumn, 20cm deep in well-drained soil where they will happily naturalise in partial shade - adding a beautiful note to a chorus of other spring bulbs and providing an impactful pop of tropical colour.
