Description

The olive green and deep-purple striped blooms of Fritillaria elwesii hang demurely in the months of April and May, adding a touch of refinement to a natural planting scheme. The unusual flowers, which hang in twos and threes, nod gently in the spring breeze from stems up to 30cm in height. Plant the bulbs in autumn in a sheltered position where they will not be blown about by strong winds as the graceful stems and foliage can be quite delicate. Native to Southern Turkey and known as the Lebanese fritillary, Fritillaria elwesii is a great plant for naturalising in long grass in part shade and on well-drained soil. This fritillary also looks fabulous as part of an informal planting scheme, or as an unusual upper storey in a pot with a combination of spring plants where its intriguing beauty can be appreciated more closely.

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
