Erysimum is a genus of approximately 180 species within the botanical family Brassicaceae. Most cultivars are native to Southern Europe. They are more commonly referred to as ‘Wallflowers’ and have been grown in Britain for centuries. It is believed that they may have been brought here from the continent with the arrival of the Normans. The word Erysimum is derived from the Latin term ‘erno’ meaning to ‘draw up’.
Erysimum are perennials, biennials and annuals with attractive bunches of small fragrant flowers and narrow lance-shaped leaves. Their colour palette ranges with varying shades of purple, yellow, orange and pink. Their long flowering period and robust nature make them a firm favourite within any garden.
