Tell Me More...
Perennial wallflowers are the more permanent, woody relatives to biennial, spring bedding varieties, and offer an exceptionally long-lasting, colourful, low-input display. They are known to flower long and hard from early spring to late summer and often beyond, with some cultivars flowering almost continually throughout the year. This collection brings together five with the most vivid colouring, in shades of orange, yellow, mauve, red, and purple. Plant together for a riotous display or give the whole garden a subtle lift by dotting here and there throughout. As short-lived perennials, Erysimum tend to become woody and straggly after four or five years. A light annual trim after flowering can extend their 'good-looking' phase, and when truly past their best they can be easily replaced with young plants raised from cuttings. Plant in a sunny spot in light, well-draining soil, preferably on the alkaline side. Erysimum originates from stony ground (hence the common name of wallflower) and dislikes having its feet wet, so add extra drainage if necessary. These evergreen perennials are hardy to between -5 C and -10 , meaning it should overwinter throughout most of the UK. In cold regions, plant in a warm, sheltered spot.
