From early summer, small, silvery, thimble-shaped flower heads adorn the compact, clump-forming Eryngium planum 'Magical Blue Globe', maturing to deep indigo as the season progresses. This striking evergreen bears two types of heavily sculpted foliage; rounded, toothed and dark green at the base, spiny and tinted blue higher up the stems. Flowers are clustered in small domes, with a 'ruff' of narrow, blue-green bracts, and are excellent for dried arrangements or providing winter interest when left on the plant. Coarse and sculptural, eryngium provides a useful contrast for more softly textured plants. Deep tap roots enable this perennial to thrive in dry, difficult conditions, including coastal areas. Prefers dry, well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil in full sun. Requires protection from winter wet to fully thrive, perhaps by planting in the rain shadow of a wall, tree, or shrub. Height of 50cm & a spread of 40cm. Hardy perennial.
