Eryngium Pen Blue was originally found growing in a garden in Somerset. A magnificent member of an architectural family which adds texture to your borders and containers. Part of the x zabelii lineage, with spiky, green, tripartite leaves and violet stems. In summer, many tiny, violet-blue flowers pack together to create egg-shaped, cone-like flowerheads, each one surrounded by particularly wide, electric-blue, ruff-like bracts. Eryngium have a long history of medical and culinary use. The name Eryngium is said to originate come from the Greek word, eruggarein, referring to the use of the plant to relieve the build up of gastric gasses by burping. Eryngium Pen Blue is amazing as cut or as dried flowers for arrangements within your home, lasting well in a vase. Rabbit resistant but very attractive to bees and butterflies, Eryngium Pen Blue is drought tolerant, preferring well-drained soil in sun. Flourishing for years without the need for winter protection, it grows to a height of approximately 60cm (24') while spreading to 40cm (16').
