Eranthis hyemalis Aconites, well known as winter aconites, provide a wonderfully cheerful carpet of bright buttercup yellow flowers in early spring, blooming almost overnight from their bed of ruffled green foliage. One of the first, zingy bursts of colour to bring a smile to our faces and an early source of food for the bees, winter aconites look fantastic when planted to naturalise beneath trees and bushes, or near the front of the border.Aconites are a member of the buttercup family, originating in shady, woodland areas of Eurasia. Clump-forming winter aconites prefer moist, humus-rich soil in full to part shade, reaching a height and spread of 10cm and needing little attention.Plant bulbs between September and October in a sheltered spot to look forward to these little yellow cups of joy as soon as winter begins to pass.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
