Description

Also known as Bishops Hat - because of its flower shape - the delicate blooms of Epimedium nod gently in the slightest breeze. Originally found growing wild in the woodlands of China and Japan, Epimedium have been a popular garden plant there for many years, here in the UK we are just starting to appreciate their beauty. Wiry stems hold sprays of pretty, star-like flowers, each with four sepals, making them look rather like little hats. Epimedium flower abundantly in spring and early summer over clumps of pretty, heart-shaped, evergreen foliage. Spreading by rhizomes, Epimedium make wonderful weed-suppressing all-year-round groundcover, just perfect for planting into borders and containers or a woodland setting. Epimedium prefer to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in full or part shade. Growing to a height of around 30cm and spread of 30-45cm, Epimedium are classed as fully hardy perennials, meaning you will enjoy them outside for many years to come without the worry of needing winter protection.
