History and Origin:

Digitalis is a genus that was traditionally placed within the Scrophulariaceae family although recent research has found that it belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. The name ‘Digitalis’ is derived from the Latin word ‘digitus’ meaning ‘finger’ as it was suggested that this is what the flower shape closely resembled.

Digitalis are short-lived perennials or biennials with delicate clusters of tubular bell-shaped blooms, held on slim, slender stems. They are most commonly referred to as ‘Foxgloves’ which was a term recorded in old English scripture as ‘Fox’s glove’ although there is no referral to Digitalis within these records. These plants are best suited to the back of a border within a variety of gardens designs such as a cottage or wildflower meadow.
