Tell Me More...
The arching, wiry 'rod like' stems of Dierama pulcherrimum 'Blackbird' rise through tufts of grassy, evergreen foliage for a graceful and magnificent display. Every summer, the strong, yet delicate looking stems rise and hold deep red-purple, bell-shaped flowers. The pendulous habit of these flowers is said to resemble silvery fishes on an angler's rod (hence the common name Angel's Fishing Rods). Flowers have an animated, nodding habit which, even on the calmest of days, provides continual, swishing movement. Native to South Africa, Dierama look amazing when grown amongst grasses where they form clumps, from which the flower stems rise. The blooms are great cut for a vase and are also much loved by bees and butterflies. Dierama pulcherrimum 'Blackbird' prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun, reaching a height of 1.2m with a spread of up to 60cm. A hardy, cormous, herbaceous perennials, which thrives outside all year round in the UK with no winter protection required other than to ensure the corms do not get too wet and rot in the ground.
