The sight of the majestic Tree fern and their large scale destruction in Tasmania started the quest to save Tree ferns. Capable of root regeneration from their fibrous trunks, our tree ferns are sourced as logs under licence from sustainable areas and are kept cold and transported into the UK to save them from extinction. Once watered into the crown and placed in a shady spot, they re-root whilst you await the magnificent unfurling of majestic fronds. Growing at a rate of 30cm (12') every 10 years they really are a joy to behold. Hardy to -10oC for very short periods, they will withstand more severe weather if the crown is covered. Care of your Dicksonia is easy. Remove faded fronds regularly. The trunk is hardier than the crown. In winter the crown of your tree fern must not be allowed to freeze so we would recommend that the top 50cm of the trunk is protected by wrapping it in several layers of horticultural fleece, or loft insulation with extra padding in the crown, until the worst frosts have passed. In the coldest areas the trunk would also benefit from some protection.

How hardy are your plants?

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
