Dichelostemma Ida-Maia

A quirky explosion of colour Flamboyant Dichelostemma ida-maia is sure to amaze as intriguing, pendulous clusters of many, deep crimson buds with green tips are held on strong stems in spring. Each bud opens, the tips gradually reflexing to reveal curious, tiny, creamy-yellow flowers. Blooming throughout spring and into early summer, the blooms are particularly attractive to butterflies. Native to California, Dichelostemma ida-maia is a highly unusual plant, related to the wild hyacinth. The grassy foliage provides early spring texture and starts to die back as flowers open. Ideal for bringing a fresh, unusual element to your borders and containers, and certain to invite a closer look. Dichelostemma ida-maia thrives when planted in well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered spot where a height of up to 40cm will be reached. Naturalising to create a bright spring carpet, Dichelostemma are half-hardy with an RHS rating of H3, so may require a mulch as protection during the coldest winters.
