Description

Dichelostemma congestum, often known as ookow, will bring a beautifully wild and airy quality to your garden in summer. Compact clusters of up to 15 lavender-coloured blooms majestically adorn stately stems and narrow grass-like foliage, the perfect addition to your summer planting scheme. Dichelostemma congestum is a variety of wild hyacinth native to the hills and mountains of North America and makes a brilliant bee-friendly addition to the garden. Plant corms on well-drained soil in a sunny position and the wiry stems will reach up to 90cm in height with flower-packed blooms the size of an egg, looking like a delicate pastel-purple allium. The spread of each ookow plant is only 10 cm, so they will not impose on other plants and make a brilliant option for under-planting, adding a natural feel to the mid-storey when planted in beautiful drifts of mauve which sway in the breeze.

How hardy are your plants?

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
