Description

Dracunculus vulgaris Dracunculus vulgaris is a striking and dramatic looking plant. Often known as the dragon arum, voodoo, or stink lily due to its distinct looks and strong, unpleasant scent! Flowering throughout spring and summer, this unique and intriguing perennial sparks interest. With a long black spadix and large maroon hooded flower head, it closely resembles a dragon's tongue, the exotic looking blooms reaching 55-65cm in height. The purple spotted stem and silver-splashed leaves make for an attractive combination. Plant tubers away from your seating area, perhaps in the middle of a border or woodland area 15cm deep in autumn or spring in humus-rich, well-drained soil. Add grit and sand around the tuber when planting to guard against rot and protect with a dry winter mulch. In the wild Dracunculus vulgaris are found growing in clefts in rocky gorges and along waterways, on waste ground, scrub or on the margins of olive groves, eking out moisture in an otherwise hot and dry environment. Grows well in open glades in sheltered woodland or at the base of a sunny wall where its extraordinary looks will add intrigue to your garden.

H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
