Rather unusual, Dahlia Wine Eyed Jill produces an endless supply of beautiful, cut pompom-like flowers for you to enjoy and admire in your home for months over summer, lasting up to 10 days in a vase. Precisely layered petals start opening deep, claret purple in the centre. then fading to light peachy-pink as they mature, to create perfectly formed, almost round flowerheads on surprisingly strong stems from June to October, often longer. Tall and vigorous, with such an abundance of blooms creating a stunningly flamboyant, colour changing display. The more you cut, the more the plant will bloom, right up to the first frosts. Dahlia originate from South America and are notorious for their colourful late summer and autumn display. Dahlia Wine Eyed Jill is great grown in borders or containers, preferring moist, well-drained soil in sun and reaching a height of approximately 1m, spreading to 50cm. Dahlia are perennial, performing for several years but are not fully hardy and dislike getting too wet over winter which causes the tuber to rot. They can be left in the ground in warmer areas if the soil is very well drained. Alternatively, why not grow them in a container and bury that into your border, this can then be lifted with the soil and tuber intact and stored in a shed until the spring.
