Description

A display of deepest crimson with cactus-like appeal Since arriving in Britain in 1798, these Mexican plants have become a firm favourite in our summer gardens. Emulating the hues of the last light of the day, your Dahlia 'Nuit d'Eté' will glow with dark crimson majesty, dipping to almost black in the centre of each double bloom. Star-like blooms of spiky petals will adorn your semi-cactus variety from June to October. These flowerheads, reaching up to 20cm in diameter, will stretch skywards on exceptionally long, sturdy stems. The striking blooms on your deciduous perennial will add interest to your bed, border or patio container. Although resistant to deer and rabbits, pollinators will appreciate the late supply of nectar offered by these flowers. Your dahlia will also provide long-lasting, cut flowers. Taking cuttings and deadheading your spent flowers will encourage your plant to vigorously produce new blooms. Pot up the tuber root of your Dahlia 'Nuit d'Eté' in a warm place and keep it inside until all risk of frost is over. When the weather improves, your half hardy dahlia will flourish in a south, east or west-facing location in your garden. Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and a sheltered spot with full sunshine are ideal growing conditions for your plant. In cooler climates, lift your tuber after the foliage has been blackened by the first frost and store it in a cool, dry place until spring. Your mature plant will reach a maximum height and spread of 1.2m by 60cm.
