Description

A liqueur of lavender and blackcurrant loveliness Once prized by the Aztecs as a food crop, dahlias have certainly had a colourful history. These days, it is hard to imagine a summer without a profusion of these exquisitely blooming Mexican flowers gracing your garden. Reminiscent of the sweet blackcurrants which flavour French liqueur, Dahlia 'Crème de Cassis' exemplifies all the elegance and grace we associate with these gorgeous blooms. The marvellous, fully double flowerheads will stretch up to greet you on elegant, long stems above serrated foliage. Bees and butterflies will also be drawn towards these alluring blooms in your garden. The tuberous, deciduous perennial will make a spectacular addition to your borders or containers and flowers profusely from June to October with long-lasting blooms which also make a vibrant addition to any floral arrangement. Furthermore, continual cutting encourages the production of further blooms. On arrival, pot up your tuber root and keep it inside until all risk of frost is over. In the garden, a south, west or east facing location which offers some shelter will best suit this half hardy plant. Flourishing in the full sunshine, your Dahlia 'Crème de Cassis' will also benefit from moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. In cooler climates, it is a good idea to lift your tuber after the first frost and store it in a cool, dry place until spring. In 1-2 years, your Dahlia 'Crème de Cassis' will reach a maximum height and spread of 90cm by 75cm.
