Description

Colchicum look like a giant crocus, taller and with slightly larger flowers than a crocus. Though referred to as Autumn crocuses, Colchicum are not crocuses at all. While they resemble those familiar spring-blooming members of the iris family, Colchicum are a separate genus which grows from bulb-like corms and produce cup-shaped blooms. There are three varieties of colchicum in this collection and are certainly worth growing. Colchicum x tenorei originates from Southern Italy and was introduced to the UK in 1858 since when it has always remained a popular choice for gardeners; Colchicum 'Waterlily' - is a divine variety with gentle pink double-flowers; Colchicum speciosum 'Album' - in A Handbook of Crocus and Colchicums, published in 1924, E A Bowles recorded that 'the first roots that were sold changed hands at the price of five guineas each' (about œ3.12 per bulb in today's money). If you have never grown Colchicum they are a glorious bulbous perennial and are worth considering. Your Colchicum collection will inlcude 3 Tenorei, 3 Album and 5 Waterlily when buying 11 bulbs. Your Colchicum collection will inlcude 6 Tenorei, 6 Album and 10 Waterlily when buying 22 bulbs.
