Description
Crocuses are eponymous with the first signs of spring as they poke their grass-like, striped leaves above the surface and, shortly after, reveal their vibrant, goblet shaped blooms. Whilst this applies to 2 of the trio ('Ruby Giant' and 'Roseus') we have a very special addition in the form of Crocus 'Sativus'. Crocus 'Sativus' is more commonly know as the Saffron Crocus. As saffron is the most expensive spice in the world, taken gramme for gramme, they really are unusual and exciting. Furthermore, they are autumn flowering and 'threads', or stamen, can be harvested and dried for culinary use. Crocus tommasinianus 'Ruby Giant' and Crocus tommasinianus 'Roseus' are not to be overshadowed though. Both have been chosen for their larger than average flowers and attractive ombre marked petals in shades of pink and purple with white. All are much loved by people and pollinators - providing either an autumnal feast or vital sustenance when awakening in spring. Crocus prefer a moist, well-drained soil and a site where they benefit from full sun. All are hardy perennial bulbs which will naturalise over time and clumps can be divided if they become overcrowded.
