Description

Colocasia have come a long way in the last few years. An edible variety of these plants was once grown purely as a vegetable crop. Now, new varieties grace our patios with gleaming displays of brilliant foliage. The large heart-shaped leaves on these plants bear a strong resemblance to 'elephant's ears'. Today, many people know these plants by this affectionate name. 3 bold varieties with brilliantly hued foliage are included in your Colocasia Collection. Your Colocasia esculenta 'Maui Gold' combines stout, creamy-white stems with large, lime-yellow leaves. In contrast, burgundy stalks and bright green foliage colour your Colocasia esculenta 'Blue Hawaii'. The leaves on this plant are also patterned with prominent, blue-purple veins which create an astonishing display. Colocasia esculenta 'Black Sapphire Gecko' completes your trio. This variety offers rich, purple-black leaves with deep maroon undersides. All the plants in your collection are semi-evergreen in frosty climates. From February to November, the vivid leaves on these glossy, architectural plants will add drama to your patio or conservatory. Colocasia generally prefer poorly drained soil, so the borders of ponds or streams are also great locations for these moisture-loving perennials. Watering your plants generously will ensure an abundant display of foliage. Regularly fertilising your colocasias during the growing season is also recommended. Plant your colocasias in acidic to neutral, nutrient-rich soil in a fully or partly sunny location. When your tender plants are dormant, store the tubers in a dry, frost-free location. In maturity, your colacasias will range in height from 1.2m to 1.5m and spread between 50cm and 1.5m.
