Description

Twirling tumults of lily-like flowers These deciduous, tuberous, tendrilled climbers are a simply stunning treat for your summer planting. Gloriosa superba 'Lutea' and Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana' both have elongated, elegant foliage and flowers. The former has vibrant yellow blooms, and the latter has large, red blooms edged with yellow. Both are sure to capture everyone's attention when they begin flowering in June and continue until August. If that is not enough, the seed pods which follow have an equally vibrant colouring and quirky appearance. With a myriad of common names such as Glory Lily, Flame Lily and Creeping Lily it is easy to see how these exciting plants have captured the imagination of bystanders. Originating from East Africa and Asia, the Gloriosa superba Collection will climb and grow to a height of between 1.5-2 metres over the warm summer months. This special plant will provide an abundance of large and intriguing flowers with 6 reflexed petals that have a swirling, wave-like edge adding interesting form, as well as colour, to your garden. A drought tolerant, tender perennial, Gloriosa superba will thrive in well-drained soil with full sun and a sheltered aspect. Against a warm wall or in a container that can be moved out of harm's way during inclement weather would be a perfect spot. With a hardiness rating of H1c this collection is only tolerant of temperatures down to 5 C so will require overwintering in a heated greenhouse or conservatory. They could also be grown as annuals or as houseplants.
