Cichorium intybus

Floriferous, caffeine-free coffee substitute Cichorium intybus is a new addition to our range of flowering herbs. This particular plant is a herbaceous perennial which grows wild in UK pastures and produces vibrant blue, daisy-like flowers from its 2nd year (once it has established a good root structure). Cichorium intybus has been an important plant across Europe since the Bronze Age. Young roots from the plant make a valuable domestic addition to soups or stews. It has been historically used to treat a range of medical needs including wounds and diabetes. In the modern-day, chicory is also grown commercially as a coffee alternative. From a gardener's perspective, it makes a valuable and colourful addition to meadow-planting, wildflower areas and even the back of a border where its tall and elegant, candelabra like stems will sway on summer breezes, waving azure blue blooms from June to August each year. Foliage is held from May to September and should be cut back either in autumn or early spring to meet your needs. Cichorium intybus prefers a site with well-drained soil in full sun. Plants grow to a maximum height of 1.5m with a spread of 1m.
