Chaenomeles are a great choice for reliable spring flowers on mass. Blooming as early as March and lasting through to May they are the perfect shrub backdrop to your spring flowering bulbs. Blooms of pure white, crimson red and vibrant orange bring gems of colour to even the coldest of March days. Hardy down to -25 C, they will come back year after year. These ornamental quince varieties have aromatic fruits in summer and autumn for continual interest. Sargentii is a low growing variety that will be good for the front of the border to provide some ground cover whilst Nivalis is the largest of the three making a brilliant back drop in the border. Crimson Gold reaches up to 1 meter and works well in containers or the border and is particularly good for training up a trellis too. Hardy perennials.

How hardy are your plants?

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
