Description

Cercis siliquastrum, a dazzling display of autumnal colour. A springtime explosion of nectar-filled, pea-shaped, deep pink blooms occurs on bare, leafless branches and unusually also the truck, proving very popular with your local pollinating friends, so expect to see a flurry of bees and butterflies. The heart-shaped blue-green leaves appear shortly after the flowers and are bronze when young maturing to shades of golden-yellow in autumn. Intriguing, flat, woody, green seedpods up to 12cm in length follow in autumn, hanging in clusters becoming brown-purple. Originating from southern Europe and western Asia, it is also known by the common name, the Judas Tree, because Judas Iscariot was said to have hanged himself from a tree of this species. Cercis siliquastrum prefers to be grown in moist well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Reaching a mature height and spread of around 8m, it is fully hardy requiring no winter protection in the majority of the UK.
