Description

Cephalanthus occidentalis is an unusual shrubby plant with a powerful, sweet scent which is sure to delight. Often seen growing in North American wetlands Cephalanthus is very adaptable to most soils except dry areas. Rarely seen in the UK, this beauty is a must. Clusters of sweetly scented, fuzzy, crisp white flowers are produced in late summer and early autumn creating 3cm globe-like spheres, the protruding stamens give a starburst affect. Full of nectar and pollen your local bees and butterflies will be delighted to visit your garden. Each bloom matures, changing into a golden-brown, ball-like cluster of nutlet fruit in autumn, providing a winter feed for our birds and lending itself to the common name of Button Bush. The handsome, glossy, green foliage with red veins turns bronze in autumn before falling for the winter. Cephalanthus occidentalis is intolerant of very dry areas, preferring to be grown in moist soil such as woodland areas, shrubby borders and even in shallow water at the edge of ponds. Best in sun or part shade, this shrub will reach a height and spread once mature, of 1.8m. A fully hardy sperennial which is hardy throughout the UK, even in severe winters.
