Camassia leichtlinii Blue Heaven displays hundreds of cornflower-blue, star-shaped blooms along the length of the tall stems, each one opening in turn starting at the bottom. This creates many weeks of colour from late spring above attractive clumps of narrow, green foliage. A wonderful spring flowerer for naturalising in wildlife gardens, mixing amongst early flowering herbaceous perennials or planting under trees in dappled shade. Also known as the Indian Hyacinth, Camassia are native to North West America. The bulbs are said to be edible and nutritious, apparently tasting a little like sweet potato when baked, although we have not tried them ourselves. It is also worth noting that they can cause extreme flatulence. Camassia are excellent when cut for your home, lasting well on their strong stems in a vase. Camassia Blue Heaven is deer and rabbit resistant and prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Reaching an approximate height of 60cm and spreading to 20cm, it is hardy in well-drained soil in most of the UK, only requiring protection in the coldest or wettest areas.
