Description

Calycanthus Venus, also known as Carolina Allspice, is a beautiful, compact shrub with aromatic foliage, producing seed pods and bark which give a spicy scent when crushed. However, it is mainly grown for the magnificent, highly fragrant, water lily-like, creamy-white flowers with yellow and purple markings. The flowers release clouds of scrumptious scent from May to September followed by the intriguing seedpods. Excellent cut for arrangements to enjoy the perfume within your home, the fragrant petals are often used as potpourri, or to sweeten sock drawers. The foliage of this rarely offered plant turns shades of gold in autumn. Trouble free, easy to grow and relatively unknown. Growing to a height and spread of 300cm, Calycanthus Venus prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun or shade. Fully hardy to around -15 C and deciduous, meaning the leaves will drop in late autumn, then sprout again in the spring.
