Calycanthus floridus, with aromatic clove scented foliage and fruity fragrant blooms is simply irresistible. Commonly known as the Carolina allspice, the bark of this showy plant has a strong camphor smell when scraped, and the leaves are also aromatic. Magnificent, solitary, dark red, water lily-like flowers, up to 5cm across, are produced, sometimes before the new spring foliage, from May to Jul. These flowers release clouds of scrumptious scent, and are followed by intriguing seedpods. The Calycanthus floridus blooms were often used, because of their sweet scent, to freshen sock drawers and are wonderful when used as an ingredient in potpourris. Trouble free and so easy to grow, this compact shrub is relatively unknown. Growing to a height and spread of approximately 2.5m, Calycanthus floridus prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun or shade. It is fully hardy to around -15 C but may need extra protection should the temperatures drop much further.
