Fabulously fragrant, delightfully decorative, and even edible, what better gift than this? Highly scented, star shaped white flowers contrast beautifully against lush green foliage and the delicious fruits bring a burst of colour to your home. This easy-grow plant will be the centre of attention, adding a touch of the Mediterranean to your conservatory all winter long and brightening your patio throughout the summer. The Citrus Mitis Calamondin Orange produces fruits that one would describe as a hybrid between the kumquat and the mandarin orange, often called the 'miniature orange'. The tangerine like fruit is long lasting and tart in flavour, making it ideal for taking the place of lemon in recipes and appearing in Asian cooking. The fruits of this tree have even been known to treat insect bites and act as a cough remedy. Be careful not to pull the fruits off, instead you should cut them. All Citrofortunella plants are hybrids that cross the kumquat with other citrus fruits to combine the edible properties of your typical citrus species with the cold hardiness of kumquats. Citrofortunella produce smaller, more compact, slightly more acidic fruits, making them fantastic ornamental plants. The hardy evergreens prefer a sunny, sheltered position and only require basic maintenance. Keep the leaves dust free to prevent mite infections and in the spring, the tips of the branches require pinching. By this we are referring to a form of pruning in which you pinch use your fingers or a sharp pair of pruning scissors to pinch off the tender, new growth at the end if the stem. This will bring out the best shape and fullness in your plants. Following this, in the summertime, your little tree will head outside where it will thrive in the warm sunlight for a few months before heading back inside to be sheltered from the harsh winter.
