Description

Originating from the grasslands and woodlands in the Eastern United States Baptisia are certainly 'born to be wild'. An exceptional plant for prairie planting, or an informal country garden look, Baptisia look equally dramatic grown in containers and in more modern planting schemes. A relative of the wildflower known as 'wild indigo' or 'false indigo', as it was once used as a dye. Baptisia create quite an impression as strong stems stand proud above clumps of handsome, light green foliage, becoming densely packed with sumptuous pea-like blooms in late spring and early summer; much to the delight of your local pollinating insects. A member of the legume family, fascinating, decorative, inflated pods follow if the blooms have not been dead headed, extending the interest into the autumn. The flower stems add drama to your fresh floral arrangements while the seed pods add intrigue to your winter creations. This collection comprises Blueberry Sundae - blue-purple, pea-like blooms above blue green foliage, Lemon Meringue - bright yellow blooms above light green foliage, Vanilla Cream - creamy yellow blooms over grey-green foliage, Deer and rabbit resistant, Baptisia require very little care. Fully hardy perennials which prefer to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun, although part shade is tolerated. Baptisia thrive outside all year round with no winter protection required in most of the UK. Dying back over winter they will sprout again in the spring.
