Often called the Abyssinian Banana, this variety has gained popularity in the United Kingdom as an exotic summer bedding plant. The leaves look straight out the jungle and when cultivated in a warm, sheltered, sunny spot, the speed of growth will astonish you. In no time, this plant will become a focal point in the garden and enhance the look of any planting scheme. Fertile, well-drained soil and with regular watering, you will have a tropical beauty with giant paddle-leaves swaying in the summer breeze. This is a tender perennial, so most gardeners cut away the leaves and store the roots in a pot overwinter. Do you get red bananas? No, no not in the UK. What you get is the most incredible red tinged foliage plant you will ever see.
