Ethereal and elegantOriginating from Japan, Athyrium niponicum 'Metallicum' is a deciduous fern with an unusual, almost frosted appearance - its fronds a silvery, grey green, with purple red midribs and stems. This delicate, feathery, slowly spreading perennial looks magnificent in a shady border, where it provides a soft, cool contrast to the richer greens of neighbouring plants. Alternatively, use as ground cover on a woodland floor, spilling over a shady path edge, as a striking foliage foil in a mixed container display, or as a cool greenhouse or conservatory plant. Prefers moist (though not waterlogged), fertile, neutral to acid, humus-rich soil in full or partial shade, in a sheltered site. H&S: 45cm x 60cm. Hardy, deciduous perennial. Cut back tatty or dead fronds in either autumn or spring.
