Description

Astrantia 'Prima Donna' is a recent variety of this old favourite, commonly known as Masterwort. Bred to flower longer than the more traditional varieties, upward shining posies of tiny claret flowers are surrounded by ruff-like bracts, forming sprays of intriguing star-like blooms. The flowers are excellent for cutting and bloom over a long period - from May to the end of September, sometimes longer. Plant bare roots in spring in moist well-drained soil in part-sun, part-shade. Slug and snail resistant. H&S: 75cm x 60cm Ideal for the middle or back of your border or a large container for adding height and airy texture, and valuable as groundcover. Propagate by division in autumn or spring or re-situate self-sown seedlings. Prune spent flowers at the end of the growing season, or as you notice them to avoid self-seeding. Astrantia 'Prima Donna' is a reliable, fully hardy perennial with an RHS hardiness rating of H4.
