Description

Astounding Alliums will have you astonished as glistening, orb-like flowerheads almost seem to magically hover over the clumps of strap-shaped foliage. Allium sphaerocephalon is also known as the drumstick allium. Clusters of small blooms form egg-shaped flowerheads, opening green and gradually maturing to mauve-purple. Allium caeruleum is also known as black garlic and displays round spheres of mid-blue blooms. Allium Moly is also known as the golden-flowered garlic, for obvious reasons as the bright yellow flowerhead shines out. Often seen in show gardens at the major flower shows, Allium are a valuable addition to both traditional or modern planting schemes, whether in borders or containers. Flowering throughout the summer, hundreds of small, perfectly formed flowers come together to create fascinating, almost spherical, globes of colour. Once known for their medical, culinary, and aphrodisiac qualities, the foliage emits a slightly oniony fragrance when crushed. Nowadays alliums are a favourite in RHS Show Gardens and we think that no garden should be without at least one. Allium are both deer and rabbit resistant and look incredible when used as cut flowers, lasting well in a vase. Much loved by bees and butterflies, allium are drought tolerant and happy even in poor soils preferring well-drained soil in sun. Hardy bulbous perennials that can be left in the ground, dying back over winter to sprout again in the spring.
