Description

Delicate, fresh, succulent spears: the gourmet highlight of spring. Asparagus 'Vittorio' has been developed for producing superb, succulent, snow-white spears. More often seen in top restaurants than in the supermarket, white asparagus is the ultimate gourmet delight. Now you can enjoy an abundance of this delicacy fresh from your own garden. To achieve thick, tender, opalescent asparagus, simply 'earth up' the crowns with sandy soil and harvest before they emerge. Alternatively, when grown above the soil, this versatile variety yields equally delicious green spears. Asparagus 'Vittorio' has been bred as an all-male hybrid to prevent the production of seed, meaning that all the plant's energy is focussed on producing superb spears. From early April through to June, this variety reliably provides a remarkably heavy crop. With an RHS hardiness rating of H4, asparagus is a hardy perennial - a rarity in the vegetable-growing world - so you can enjoy bigger and better crops year after year with minimum maintenance. Feathery foliage reaches up to 1.5m height and 45cm spread. Asparagus will thrive in richly fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to alkaline pH, positioned in full sun. Plant between March and June for a bumper crop the following year.
