Artichokes are one of the oldest foodstuffs known to humans; introduced to humanity by the Greek God Zeus - if you believe Greek mythology. Artichoke Imperial Star was a variety bred for professional growers of artichokes. The largest growing area in the world is California; the nurserymen and women required an artichoke which could be harvested all year round. Thus, came into the world Imperial Star (but not from Zeus this time). The interesting feature for UK gardeners regards Artichoke Imperial Star, is it was bred specifically as a cold climate artichoke. This gives Imperial Star a sweet and full flavour. If you have never cultivated artichokes before, they are well worth growing. Low in fat, high in fibre, and loaded with vitamins and minerals, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, phosphorus, and magnesium. They are also one of the richest sources of antioxidants. Perhaps time to try growing something new in the vegetable garden?
