One of the best to use as cut flowers in a vase, the double, rich violet-blue, pompom-like blooms of Aquilegia vulgaris Blue Barlow nod in the breeze, as they are held on wiry stems above layered petticoats of lacy grey green foliage, throughout spring and summer. Happy growing in either your borders or containers, Aquilegia will encourage butterflies into your garden to feast on the nectar. The spur-less Barlow series were bred from a plant originally found in the garden of Nora Barlow. Aquilegia have many common names, such as Granny's Bonnet, or Columbine. In folklore, carrying a posy of Columbine was said to stir the affections of someone you love. Despite the delicate appearance, this hardy perennial is a tough little chap and very easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. It will self-seed around your garden, or alternatively collect the seed to sow and raise more plants the following year. Growing to a height of approximately 90cm and spreading to around 30-45cm, Aquilegia Blue Barlow is even rabbit and slug resistant.
