Double blooms are held in clusters on tall stems and nod in the breeze above layered petticoats of lacy grey-green foliage throughout spring and summer. Despite their delicate appearance these hardy perennials are tough little chaps and very easy to grow in sun or part shade. The pretty mounds of foliage are rabbit and slug resistant. Also known as Columbine, deriving from columba, meaning dove, because the petals are said to look like five dove sitting in a circle. It was once believed that to encourage romantic attention from a loved one, you should include Aquilegia blooms when carrying your posy. In medieval times, rubbing aquilegia on the palms of your hands was said to give you courage. Preferring to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun or dappled shade and growing to a height of 90cm and spread 45cm, Aquilegia vulgaris are fully hardy, herbaceous perennials. This means that they will thrive outside in your borders and containers all year round with no winter protection required, dying back over winter, to reappear every spring.

How hardy are your plants?

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
