Description

One of the best for use as cut flowers for a vase, the double, rich violet-blue, pompom-like blooms of Aquilegia vulgaris Blue Barlow nod in the breeze as they are held on wiry stems above layered petticoats of lacy grey green foliage throughout spring and summer. Happy grown in either borders or containers, Aquilegia will encourage butterflies into your garden to feast on the nectar. The spur-less Barlow series were bred from a plant originally found in the garden of Nora Barlow. Aquilegia have many common names, such as Granny's Bonnet, or Columbine. In folklore, carrying a posy of Columbine was said to stir the affections of someone you love. Despite the delicate appearance this hardy perennial is a tough little chap and very easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. It will self-seed around your garden a little, or alternatively why not collect the seed to sow and raise more plants the following year. Growing to a height of approximately 90cm and spreading to around 30-45cm, Aquilegia Blue Barlow is even rabbit and slug resistant.
