A florist's dream, Ammi majus is superbly versatile annual, much loved, and often used in wedding bouquets and in RHS show gardens at Chelsea Flower Show. Large, flattened umbels open to reveal many, lace-like, nectar-rich blooms which almost seem to airily hover on strong stems over the ferny foliage from June to September, a delight for local insects. Make sure you cut some of these dainty-looking blooms to enjoy in your home, as cut stems last up to 10 days in a vase, perfect dried or dyed too. Also known as Bishops Flower, Ammi majus is often confused with Queen Anne's Lace, but it is not invasive. So easy to grow, Ammi majus has been given the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society for outstanding performance in the garden. It prefers to be grown in well-drained soil in sun reaching a height of 90cm and spread of approximately 30cm. It is a hardy annual producing seed which are loved by goldfinches or can easily be collected and sown to make many new plants for the following year.
